What is the difference between a Metered controlled water softener and a Timer controlled water softener?
Metered Controlled Softener:- This Machine will only perform a regenoration based upon your water consumption. This "Compact" model is suitable for up to 4 people.
Timer Controlled Softener:- This Machine will only regenerate at a configured time/day regardless of consumption. This "Compact" model is suitable for up to 4 people.
Which unit is best for me?
If your water usage changes from week to week then the Metered controlled would be more efficient . If your water usage remains the same week to week then the Timer controlled would be ok to use. Unit size then depends on number of people in the household.
Can this unit be installed outside?
We do not recommend this unit be installed outside. For outside unit please order the units that come with the cover i.e the space saver or the large models.
How does it work?
The Aquasmart "Compact" Series unit has a timer and regenerates on a selected pre set day. Each time it regenerates it will produce approx 600 litres of softened water (this is an approx value it may change depending on your water hardness).
The unit has a capacity to produce up-to approx 3200 litres of softened water per week.
Where will i save money?
Softened water provides real cost savings in service, maintenance and replacement of water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and showers and also extends their life. It will improve the efficiency of hot water and heating systems-just 1.6mm (1/16") of scale build-up in heating systems will cause a 12% loss in heating efficiency. Softened water can also remove existing scale deposits in hot water and heating systems as well as the scale around taps, in shower heads and stains on baths and basins.
How does the water softener work?
The idea behind a water softener is simple. The calcium and magnesium ions in the water are replaced with sodium ions. Since sodium does not precipitate out in pipes or react badly with soap, both of the problems of hard water are eliminated. To do the ion replacement, the water in the house runs through a bed of small plastic beads. The beads are covered with sodium ions. As the water flows past the sodium ions, they swap places with the calcium and magnesium ions. Eventually, the beads contain nothing but calcium and magnesium and no sodium, and at this point they stop softening the water. It is then time to regenerate the beads or zeolite with brine (salt) which must be added to the salt tank every 1-2 months depending on water usage.
Regeneration involves soaking the beads in a stream of sodium ions. Salt is sodium chloride, so the water softener mixes up a very strong brine solution and flushes it through the beads (this is why you load up a water softener with salt). The strong brine displaces all of the calcium and magnesium that has built up in the beads and replaces it again with sodium. The remaining brine plus all of the calcium and magnesium is flushed out through a drain pipe.
